The Ultradian Rhythm: Working With Your Brain's Natural Cycles

90-minute brain cycles, high/low phases, what to do in energy dips, ultradian rest response, how respecting cycles prevents burnout.

The human brain operates in 90-minute cycles of high and low energy, called the ultradian rhythm. During the high phase, you experience focus, productivity, and creative capacity. During the low phase, energy dips, focus diminishes, and the body signals a need for rest. Most modern people ignore this signal, reaching for coffee, stimulants, or social media to push through. This only increases dysregulation and compounds fatigue. The solution is simple: respect the rhythm. When you enter the low phase, rest genuinely. A 15-20 minute nap, a walk, quiet time — anything that allows the nervous system to actually settle. With this rest, the next high phase arrives refreshed and powerful. Working against the ultradian rhythm is one of the primary causes of burnout. Respecting it is one of the simplest paths to sustainable energy and wellbeing.
