What Is Family Constellation Therapy? A Beginner's Guide
Accessible intro to Family Constellation — Hellinger, the knowing field, session structure, misconceptions, who benefits, and what results look like.
Family Constellation therapy is based on the principle that every family is a system with invisible dynamics. German therapist Bert Hellinger discovered that when excluded family members are included and the proper order is restored, profound healing occurs. In a constellation session, the client briefly describes their issue. The facilitator asks group members to represent family members or relevant figures. These representatives are placed in relation to each other, and remarkably, they begin to experience feelings and body sensations belonging to the people they represent — without prior knowledge of the family. As the facilitator guides the work, hidden dynamics reveal themselves. A common misconception is that you need your actual family members present. You don't. Another is that you must relive trauma. You don't. The constellation work is gentle and non-intrusive. Many people experience profound shifts after a single session.
